Foods I Syllabus
This courses examines the nutritional needs of the individual.  Emphasis is placed on the relationship of diet to health, and kitchen and meal management.  Skills in science, reading, and mathematics literacy are reinforced in this course.  Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include field trips, job shadowing, and service learning.  FCCLA leadership activities provide the opportunitiy to apply instructional competencies and workplace readiness skill to authentic experiences.

Students are required to pay a $10 fee for this class.  This money goes toward the purchae of food needed for labs.  All fees/fee waivers are to be taken care of by Wednesday, August 31st.  Students who have not paid fees or shown me their fee waiver by this date will lose lab privileges.  You will need a three ring binder, glue stick, flash drive, notebook paper, pens/pencils and  to be used throughout the semester. Various grocery items for the Performance Exam will be needed at the end of the semester.

During this course, you will compile your own personal recipe book on your flash drive.   It will include all of the recipes we complete in our labs, and the recipes of your choice.  You are responsible for keeping up with your recipe book materials throughout the semester.  This recipe book will be turned in at the end of the semester for a test grade.

Your attendance is important.  You are given individual grades on your labs, classwork, tests, and participation.  Students absent on test days will have three days from the date of return to make up the missed test.  After three days, a zero will be given. This rule also applies to classwork.   It is YOUR responsibililty to schedule a makeup time for your missed test as well as completing missed classwork.

At the end of the semester, a performance exam will be given based on the curriculum and skills we have studied throughout the semester.  Your group will be responsible for providing the majority of the ingredients to prepare your chosen recipe.

Report card grades will be determined as follows:  Labs 20%, Tests 25%, Classwork 20%, Projects 20%, Participation 15%.  There will be a
written Vocats final exam which will be 25% of the final grade.  There are no final exam exemptions for this class. Sleeping in class, not participating in group discussions, not following the posted classroom, causing disruptions of teaching and learning, or using lab supplies/groceries without teacher permission will result in appropriate disciplinary action, a lowered participation grade, and possible elimuination from future lab activities.
